Mingyi Old Street is the axis. Rooms in the blocks around it put a visitor inside the part of Jincheng that is genuinely walkable, with Houpu Lingji Temple, the shophouse frontages and the short lanes running off them all reachable without transport of any kind. Beds cluster here.
If you have come for the monument circuit and want the Chastity Arch for Qiu Liang-gong's Mother before breakfast, this is the base that makes it possible. Zhushan Village is the alternative. It appears on the county's monument list in its own right, so a bed out there means stepping into a village fabric rather than onto a county-seat street, which is a slower proposition and a quieter one.
Evenings go early. Chen Shi-yin Western Style House and Khu-liông-kong Historic House belong to the same building tradition, and a stay on that side of Jincheng puts the domestic architecture ahead of the civic. Kinmen County runs its administration from here.
The blocks holding those offices are the practical base for anyone in Jincheng on business rather than for Zhu Zi Ci or Kinmen Church of Christ, and they trade atmosphere for a short walk to everything official. Rooms are plainer. Nothing in a township of this size is truly far from anything else, so the choice between the three is a matter of what you want outside the door in the morning rather than of distance.
About Jincheng
What is Jincheng known for?
Jincheng is the administrative centre of Kinmen County, an urban township on the south-western corner of the island of Kinmen, and its street grid carries the county's offices. Governance is the through-line. Between 1949 and 1956, and again from 1996 to 2018, Fuchien Province kept its seat here, which made a township of this size the address of a provincial government twice over.
In 2012 the Tourism Bureau picked it out as one of ten small tourist towns.
What are the main landmarks in Jincheng?
Mingyi Old Street runs through the middle of it. Around that line Jincheng keeps a dense set of listed buildings, Houpu Lingji Temple, Zhu Zi Ci, Lai Bu Bio, 豐蓮山牧馬侯祠, alongside the Chastity Arch for Qiu Liang-gong's Mother and the Kinmen Military Headquarters of Qing Dynasty. Merchant houses make up the rest.
Chen Shi-yin Western Style House, Tang Oen Yauw Western House and Khoo Un-suan Western Style House carry the western manner their names announce, while Deyue Gun Tower answers to a different need entirely.
What is the history of Jincheng?
The township dates from 1953. That year fixed Jincheng as an administrative unit, but the ground it covers had been governed long before, and the Kinmen Military Headquarters of Qing Dynasty survives in the town as the plainest evidence of it. Qing officials worked from Kinmen.
The Chastity Arch for Qiu Liang-gong's Mother belongs to the same centuries, an honorific structure of the kind imperial administration handed out, and 文應舉墓 and 盧若騰故宅 are recorded alongside it. Provincial government arrived in 1949. Fuchien Province ran from Jincheng until 1956, an arrangement that put a provincial seat and a county seat on one township at once, and the town has answered to Kinmen County throughout.
The province left, then came back. Jincheng held the provincial seat again from 1996 until 2018, when the arrangement was wound down a second time and the county administration was left as the town's principal public business. Foreign money and foreign faith left their own marks.
Chen Shi-yin Western Style House and Tang Oen Yauw Western House record builders working in an imported manner, Kinmen Church of Christ records a congregation, and 薛氏大宗宗祠 together with Zhu Zi Ci stands for the lineage and scholarly institutions that came before either. Zhushan Village keeps the older fabric.
Where is Jincheng?
Kinmen is an island, and Jincheng holds its south-western corner. The township covers roughly 22 square kilometres, small enough that the county offices, Mingyi Old Street and Zhushan Village all fall within a short drive of one another. Kinmen County takes in the rest.
A corner position puts water along part of the boundary and the island's interior along the remainder, which is the whole of Jincheng's geography in one line.
What is the climate of Jincheng?
The northeast monsoon does the shaping. Wind crosses the Taiwan Strait through the cold half of the year and reaches Kinmen across open water, so winter in Jincheng arrives with more edge than a subtropical island usually carries. Summer reverses the flow.
Warm and wet months follow, and water on most sides keeps the extremes off, so the township records neither the heat nor the chill that inland ground at the same remove from the tropics can deliver.
How do you get to Jincheng?
Everything arrives by air or water. Kinmen is an island, so reaching Jincheng means a flight into the county's airfield or a crossing by boat, and no road runs in from anywhere else. The township is the county seat.
That is where the road network of Kinmen County points, and the walk from a drop-off to Mingyi Old Street is short enough that arriving without a car costs a visitor very little.
