What is the history of Moshi?
Moshi grew on the mountain's rich slopes. The Chagga people long farmed the fertile volcanic land below Kilimanjaro, and when the Germans and then the British came, they planted coffee on the slopes and built a town as its market. Coffee made the town.
Moshi became the heart of the coffee trade, where the beans of the mountain were graded and sold, and its name spread with the fame of Kilimanjaro coffee. The great peak drew the climbers. As the world came to climb Kilimanjaro, Moshi grew into the base town for the treks, where porters and guides set out for the summit.
