What is Central Region known for?

Central Region is best known as the home of Kampala, Uganda's largest city and the seat of the historic kingdom of Buganda. The region wraps the northern shore of Lake Victoria. Its towns cluster there.

Around Kampala stand the Kasubi Tombs, the royal burial ground of the Buganda kings, while the airport town of Entebbe sits on a peninsula reaching into the lake to the south. This is the country's political and cultural core.

Where is Central Region?

Central Region occupies the plateau country north of Lake Victoria in Uganda, the great inland sea whose waters mark the region's long southern edge. Kampala rises across a cluster of hills a short way back from the shore, and Entebbe reaches south on a peninsula that pushes into the lake itself. The land here is a gently rolling plateau.

Red-soil ridges alternate with papyrus wetlands and small streams that drain toward the lake, and scattered swamps fill the low ground between the settled hilltops. Jinja lies off to the east, beyond the regional boundary, where the lake begins to feed the Nile. The whole region sits well inland, far from any coast, its climate and farming shaped by altitude rather than by the sea.

This is equatorial highland, not lowland tropics. Banana groves and small farms cover much of the ground between the towns.

Central Region is the easiest part of Uganda to reach, since the country's main international airport sits at Entebbe on Lake Victoria. From there a road runs the short way north to Kampala, the regional hub. Buses and shared taxis fan out from the capital to towns across the region, and the road east toward Jinja carries much of the through traffic.
