Two things fix a stay in Southaven: the I-55 and I-69 exits and the Memphis line at Whitehaven. Most rooms sit near the freeway, because the corridor crosses the whole city from north to south and puts the Memphis approach within a few minutes of any exit along it. That is the practical answer.
It costs something in character, since one interchange resembles another and the older DeSoto County texture around Capleville Methodist Church is not what a corridor hotel delivers. Southaven overtook Bartlett, Tennessee to become the largest of Memphis's suburbs, and the supply of beds on the Mississippi side of the line reflects that history. Whitehaven is the reason the name works.
The counterweight is Capleville. Capleville Methodist Church stands away from the freeway on ground that keeps an older DeSoto County name, and beds thin out fast in that direction, so a car matters more there than anywhere else in the city. Memphis is the third choice.
Crossing into Tennessee changes the address and very little else, because the Whitehaven side and the Southaven side are separated by minutes rather than by anything a visitor would register. If you are here for the Mississippi Delta drive or the TigerMan Karate Dojo & Museum, take the freeway exits; if the days will be spent in Greater Memphis, the Whitehaven end of the city saves the most time.
