The village dates its charter to 1903. Before that the ground was a stretch of Westchester County beside the Bronx River, and incorporation fixed the boundaries it still keeps, one-and-a-half miles by three-quarters of a mile, small enough to cross on foot in an afternoon. The official name remains the Village of Tuckahoe.
Distance did the rest. Sixteen miles between this ground and midtown Manhattan turned a riverside settlement in New York into a suburb of New York City, and the village has held that role since.
