What are the main landmarks in Hạ Long?
The islands of Ha Long Bay are the wonder of the north. The thousands of limestone towers and islets rising sheer from the jade sea, riddled with caves and arches and hidden lagoons, fill the bay off the city, the emblem of Vietnam, on the water. Great caves pierce the stone.
The grotto of Sung Sot opens its huge chambers in the cliffs nearby, while the junk piers, the floating villages, and the beach at Bãi Cháy mark the shore around Hạ Long.
What is the history of Hạ Long?
The bay came before the city. Fishermen long worked the maze of islands, sheltering their boats in the coves, and old tales told of a great dragon that plunged into the sea and threw up the isles of stone to bar the invader. The dragon gave its name.
From that story the water took the name Ha Long, the bay of the descending dragon, and the islands became the wonder of the northern coast. Coal built the modern town. Under French rule the mines of Hòn Gai dug the black coal of Quảng Ninh, and a grimy port grew on the eastern shore while a beach resort rose at Bãi Cháy across the strait.
The two towns joined as one. Late in the last century Hòn Gai and Bãi Cháy were made a single city named for the bay, and the world began to sail in to see the islands, so that Hạ Long lived by coal and by the sea. The junks still thread the isles.

Hạ Long lies on the coast of the Gulf of Tonkin, in the far northeast of Vietnam near the Chinese border. The city runs along the shore in two halves, the beach resort of Bãi Cháy and the coal town of Hòn Gai, joined by a bridge over a strait, while offshore the drowned limestone hills of the bay stand in their thousands. Green water winds among them.

Hạ Long has a warm, wet monsoon climate. Hot damp summers and cool dry winters cross the coast, with heavy rain and the odd typhoon in summer and a grey chill in winter. The summer sea turns warm.

How do you get to Hạ Long?
Hạ Long sits on the coast of Quảng Ninh in northeastern Vietnam. Roads and buses run to it along the coast from Hanoi and Hải Phòng, and boats leave the wharves for the bay. Junks cross the water.
