Settlement came early. New Town was settled just a week after Sullivans Cove, which makes it generally considered the oldest suburb in Hobart, and the wealth of the town's leading families followed the road out here. Large farms held the land.
They were broken up following the world wars, and the blocks filled in until New Town read as an inner city suburb rather than farmland.
