What is the history of East Melbourne?

East Melbourne was laid out in the nineteenth century as a genteel residential suburb on the rising ground east of central Melbourne. Money built it. Grand terraces and church spires rose on Eastern Hill as the colony prospered, and St Patrick's Cathedral was raised there in bluestone over several decades.

Tasma Terrace and the rows around it survive from that Victorian age. Cooks' Cottage was later set in the district's public gardens as a memorial to the navigator. The suburb kept its quiet character.
