Asenovgrad splits between the streets under the fortress rock and the Rhodope valley above. The streets below the fortress keep the churches, the market, and the museum within a walk, and staying downtown suits anyone here for the old town. The rock towers over the streets.
Bells ring from the churches. Out toward the gorge and the monastery, the town gives way to the vineyards, the Bachkovo road, and the Rhodope forests. A room up the valley trades the streets for the wooded gorge, the mountain wine cellars, and the quiet of the hills.
The peaks rise green to the south. Stay downtown for the fortress, or up the valley for the monastery. The centre sits only a little way back down the valley.

Asen's Fortress is the pride of Asenovgrad. The medieval castle on its sheer rock, crowned by a little stone church of the thirteenth century, rises high above the gorge, the emblem of the town, downtown. A monastery lies up the valley.
The great Bachkovo Monastery, with its old frescoes and holy icon, stands in the hills nearby, while the old churches, the fortress rock, and the Rhodope vineyards mark the country around Asenovgrad.
What is the history of Asenovgrad?
Asenovgrad grew below an old fortress. A stronghold has guarded the mouth of the gorge since ancient times, holding the road from the plain into the Rhodope hills. A great tsar rebuilt the walls.
In the thirteenth century the Bulgarian tsar Ivan Asen raised the fortress anew on its crag, with a church that still stands, and the town below took his name in the end. Monks and vintners filled the valley. Up the gorge the monks of Bachkovo built one of the greatest monasteries of the land, and the townsfolk grew vines on the warm slopes and pressed their famous wine.
The town kept many churches. Long a Greek and Bulgarian town called Stanimaka, it held dozens of old churches in its narrow streets, and Asenovgrad grew into a busy market at the mountain's foot, keeping its fortress, its monastery, and its wine. The crag still guards the gorge.
Asenovgrad keeps its rock and its vineyards below the Rhodopes.
Where is Asenovgrad?
Asenovgrad lies in the south of Bulgaria, where the Rhodope Mountains rise from the Thracian plain. The town sits at the mouth of a gorge on the Asenitsa river, wedged between the flat farmland to the north and the wooded mountains to the south, with the fortress crag towering over the river and vineyards on the slopes. The gorge cuts deep to the south.

Asenovgrad has a mild, continental climate. Warm dry summers and cool damp winters hold in the valley, with hot ripening days for the vine and snow on the mountains in winter. The summer warms the slopes.

Asenovgrad lies in southern Bulgaria, just south of Plovdiv at the mountain's foot. The road and rail run to it the short way up from Plovdiv, and lanes climb south into the Rhodope valleys. Trains stop by the rock.
