Belo Horizonte holds the rooms. Alto Vera Cruz is a working residential bairro on the east side, and what a visitor finds is its commerce, which gathers thickly along the Rua Tebas. Buses reach it directly.
Two lines run to São Bento and Dom Bosco, and the Circular Leste passes through the area on its way round. Getting here once meant walking to the Horto for the tram.

What are the main landmarks in Alto Vera Cruz?
Culture is what this bairro puts forward. The Centro Cultural Alto Vera Cruz anchors it, alongside the Centros de Vivência Agroecológica, the centre for children and adolescents known as CIAME, and the family support unit that places young people in work. Seven associations existed by the late 1980s.
They had grown out of the urbanisation of the area, and projects, sport and leisure groups came with them. Music carried the name furthest. Evandro Emeci and Daniel do rap formed Processo Hip Hop at the end of the 1980s, the Meninas de Sinhá followed in 1998 out of the Lar Feliz meetings, and the rapper Flávio Renegado was born and raised here and began his career in the bairro.
What is the history of Alto Vera Cruz?
Farms covered this ground first. They belonged to the Necésio Tavares, Marçola and Jonas Veiga families, and part of the land lay inside the Parque Vera Cruz. A map of 1936 already drew the streets.
The Belo Horizonte survey of that year showed the layout of the future Vera Cruz bairro and part of Alto Vera Cruz, before anything stood on it. Two companies bought it and left it. The land went to Comiteco and then to Ferrobel, which was supposed to urbanise it and did not, so the area lay abandoned and its environment degraded, though the córrego Santa Teresinha ran clean and full through dense forest.
Occupation began in 1950. There was no infrastructure and no sanitation, and settlement only intensified through the 1960s as construction workers arrived, reaching the place by the train from Sabará or the jardineira on the rua Leopoldo Gomes.
