Rua Barão de Igarapé Miri is Guamá's commercial street, with the Mercado Municipal do Guamá, pharmacies, shops and the parish of São Pedro e São Paulo. Its river ports link Belém with the interior of Pará. The Avenida Perimetral, shared with Terra Firme and known as the Perimetral da Ciência, leads to the UFPA and UFRA campuses.

About Guamá
What are the main landmarks in Guamá?
The Cidade Universitária Prof. José da Silveira Netto, the main campus of the Federal University of Pará, stands in Guamá with the João de Barros Barreto University Hospital. The Santa Isabel cemetery opened in 1878.
From 1885 the cemetery of the Third Order of Saint Francis faced it. Rua Silva Castro hosts the bairro's processions, parades and samba school displays, and Bole-Bole, one of Belém's most traditional samba schools, comes from Guamá.
What is the history of Guamá?
Guamá grew around exclusion. In the early 19th century the first leprosarium in the Amazon, the Hospício dos Lázaros do Tucunduba, opened here, and people fleeing its poor conditions sped up the area's makeshift settlement. Three more hospitals followed, and one became the João de Barros Barreto University Hospital.
The hospice closed in 1938. During the rubber boom, migrants from the north-east arriving through São Brás found cheaper homes in Guamá, and the bairro slowly took shape.
