That name passed to the capitania hereditária of Rio Grande do Norte, so the district's name and the state's own trace back to a single stretch of water reaching the sea at Natal.
What is the history of Potengi?
The first colonists pushed into the territory by water, entering with their vessels along a delta they found at the coastline of Natal and renaming the river for its large channel and extension. The Rio Grande stuck. From it came the name of the capitania hereditária of Rio Grande do Norte, the unit that preceded the modern state, while the Tupi word Potengi stayed with the river and is shared by this district.
