Where to stay in Farrapos
How the choice of base plays out on the ground.
Farrapos is residential ground with a small food trade and a health post, and the reason most outsiders come is football. The Arena do Grêmio stands here. It replaced the Estádio Olímpico Monumental as the home of Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense in 2013, which put a stadium crowd into a bairro that had not had one before.
About Farrapos
What are the main landmarks in Farrapos?
The Arena do Grêmio is the landmark and there is no second one. Companies keep their bases around the bairro rather than inside it, among them Zandoná and the Auto Viação Navegantes, which is the pattern of an industrial edge of the city. The Avenida Padre Leopoldo Brentano meets the Avenida A. J. Renner at the boundary.
What is the history of Farrapos?
Farrapos was settled as Porto Alegre grew northward, and the bairro was formally created by law on the seventeenth of November 1988, its boundaries revised since. Locals call it Vila Farrapos. The largest change came in 2013, when the Arena do Grêmio opened here and the club left the Estádio Olímpico Monumental it had used for decades.
Where is Farrapos?
Farrapos sits in the northern zone of Porto Alegre and belongs to the Humaitá-Navegantes planning region, on flat low ground near the water where the city runs out towards the industrial river frontage. The corner where the Avenida Padre Leopoldo Brentano meets the Avenida A. J. Renner is the point its boundary is drawn from. It is not a large bairro.
