Sapperton keeps no monument row. Its nearest historic marker is the former British Columbia Penitentiary, which stands off to one side, with Sapperton lying northeast of the old prison grounds. Brunette Avenue and Columbia Street do the rest, carrying the shops and the daily traffic of the neighbourhood along the slope that falls toward the Fraser River.
Coquitlam and Burnaby lie immediately past the boundary.
What is the history of Sapperton?
Institutional history shapes the record here. The British Columbia Penitentiary once stood on the ground just off the neighbourhood, and Sapperton grew on the slope northeast of it, above the Fraser River in what became the City of New Westminster. That prison is long closed.
Brunette Avenue and Columbia Street still hold the neighbourhood's centre of gravity in the northeastern part of the city, hard against the Coquitlam and Burnaby boundaries.
