About Coquitlam

Water is the civic habit here.

What is Coquitlam known for?

The Chimo Aquatic and Fitness Centre and the City Centre Aquatic Complex carry the recreational side, and neither is the kind of attraction that pulls visitors in from outside the Lower Mainland. Art fills the other slot. The Black Arts Centre and the Marianne and Edward Gibson Art Museum handle exhibitions, and the PoMo Museum keeps the local record.

Parks do the rest.

What are the main landmarks in Coquitlam?

Nothing here is a headline. The PoMo Museum, The Black Arts Centre, and the Marianne and Edward Gibson Art Museum are the cultural entries, and the Catherine Armstrong House and the Holy Trinity Romanian Orthodox Church are the built ones. Everything else on the list is sport.

Westwood Motorsport Park, the Chimo Aquatic and Fitness Centre, and the City Centre Aquatic Complex cover the active side, with Queen's Park Arena, New Westminster close enough to count. Parks fill the gaps between them.

What is the history of Coquitlam?

Incorporation dates from 1908. Coquitlam grew as a suburb of Vancouver rather than as a town with its own reason for being, and the shape of the city still follows from that. The Catherine Armstrong House carries a family name rather than a civic one.

Later arrivals left their own marks, and the Holy Trinity Romanian Orthodox Church stands for a community with its own history in the Lower Mainland. The city sits inside the Lower Mainland, one of many municipalities that filled in around the larger centre. Metro Vancouver came later as a framework.

Coquitlam is one of the 21 municipalities inside it, and within the Tri-Cities it is the largest, which gives the city a weight its suburban reputation does not suggest. Racing had a chapter here. Westwood Motorsport Park belongs to the city's record as much as any building does, and it is the one entry on the list that was never about living quietly.

The PoMo Museum keeps the rest. British Columbia and Canada supply the wider frame, and the city's own story stays local, told through its houses, its church, and its two aquatic centres.

Where is Coquitlam?

Metro Vancouver is the container. Coquitlam sits inside the Lower Mainland as one of the 21 municipalities that make up the metropolitan area, and it is the largest of the Tri-Cities within that. Parks break up the built ground.

Park land rather than any single landform gives the city its open space, and it is the walking that visitors are pointed toward. British Columbia holds it all.

What is the climate of Coquitlam?

The Lower Mainland pattern applies. Coquitlam lies in the temperate band of the northern hemisphere inside Metro Vancouver, close enough to the coast that neither end of the year runs to extremes. Parks stay usable most of the year.

The walking that the city is known for does not stop for the season, and the City Centre Aquatic Complex and the Chimo Aquatic and Fitness Centre cover the days when outdoors is not the answer. Bring a light shell.

How do you get to Coquitlam?

Vancouver is the arrival point. Coquitlam is a suburb of it, one of the 21 municipalities inside Metro Vancouver, so arrivals come through the regional network rather than to the city directly. The Tri-Cities run together.

Moving between them takes minutes rather than hours, and New Westminster is close enough that Queen's Park Arena, New Westminster turns up on Coquitlam itineraries. A car simplifies everything.
