The name came from England. Hull was named after Kingston upon Hull in England, and the settlement dates from 1800, which makes it the oldest neighbourhood of the city of Gatineau. Government work followed, and Hull holds the central business district of Gatineau along with offices of Canada's National Capital Region on the north shore of the Ottawa River.
Two rivers held the site. The west bank of the Gatineau River and the frontage opposite Ottawa gave the neighbourhood its position from the start.
