About Gatineau

Two rivers meet inside the city.

What is Gatineau known for?

The Gatineau River comes down through the middle to join the Ottawa River, and the whole north bank works as the Québec half of the National Capital Region, tied to Ottawa across the water. Museums sit on this side. The Canada Aviation and Space Museum counts among the National Capital Region's draws, and the Outaouais administrative region looks to Gatineau as its largest centre.

What are the main landmarks in Gatineau?

Parish churches carry the older names. The Church of St Rose of Lima, the Church of St Richard, and the Church of St René Goupil mark three separate parishes on the north bank of the Ottawa River. Casa Loma and the Hart Massey House add domestic architecture to the list, and the Centre sportif Ville de Gatineau covers the civic side of it.

The Canada Aviation and Space Museum belongs to the same National Capital Region roster.

What is the history of Gatineau?

Everything here starts from the water. The founding is placed at 1800, when the north bank of the Ottawa River was still the far side of a river frontier and the Gatineau River ran back into the country behind it. Parishes followed the settlement.

The Church of St Rose of Lima, the Church of St Richard, and the Church of St René Goupil each served their own ground, which is how a city of this shape records its growth, in separate parish centres rather than one old town. Casa Loma and the Hart Massey House stand among the named survivors. Ottawa changed the equation.

Once the capital settled directly across the Ottawa River, the north bank became part of a two-province urban area, and Gatineau's place inside the National Capital Region has shaped it ever since. The Outaouais region kept its own frame. Gatineau grew into the largest city of that region while remaining in Québec, and the Ottawa-Gatineau area reads as one urban whole across a provincial boundary.

The Centre sportif Ville de Gatineau and the Canada Aviation and Space Museum belong to that later civic layer, built for a city the original riverside settlement never anticipated.

Where is Gatineau?

The Ottawa River is the boundary. Gatineau holds the north bank of it, with Ottawa and Ontario directly opposite, and the Gatineau River comes down through the municipality to join it from the country behind. The territory is wide.

Built-up ground clusters along the two rivers, while the rest of the municipal area runs back from the water into the Outaouais, so the built city keeps close to the two rivers.

What is the climate of Gatineau?

No ocean reaches this valley. The Ottawa River valley sits far inland, and the temperate year runs to extremes at both ends, with deep cold and snow through the winter months and hot, humid weather in July and August. The Gatineau River carries the spring melt down to the confluence, which is the clearest local marker of the turn from one season to the next.

Little softens either end.

How do you get to Gatineau?

Ottawa sits directly across. Arrivals for the National Capital Region generally land on the Ontario side and cross the Ottawa River into Gatineau, which makes the capital's transport the practical front door for the north bank as well. The municipality is not compact.

Reaching the Church of St René Goupil or the Centre sportif Ville de Gatineau from the riverfront means crossing districts separated by the Gatineau River, and the Outaouais beyond them is road country.
