Where to stay in Goma

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

The Lake Kivu waterfront decides most of it. Rooms along Goma's southern edge take the lake itself, looking out over the water toward the far shore, and they sit within reach of the Cathedral of Saint Joseph and the Mother of Peace in the built-up middle of the city. Water on one side, volcano on the other.

A bed on the eastern side of town instead puts the Rwanda frontier a few streets away, which suits arrivals crossing that boundary rather than travellers who came for the lake. The volcano side is thinner ground for beds. Toward the north the streets give out under Mount Nyiragongo and the open floor of the Albertine Rift, so the lodging of North Kivu's capital keeps to the shore and the centre instead of climbing toward the cone.

Pick by your errand. If you are here for Lake Kivu itself, take the waterfront; if your business runs into the province, the central streets sit closer to the offices that serve the Masisi Territory, the Bukumu Chiefdom and the rest of the North Kivu country. Bukavu, at the southern end of the lake, is a separate stay rather than an alternative to Goma.

About Goma

Mount Nyiragongo answers for the skyline.

What is Goma known for?

Goma is the capital and the largest city of the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, spread along the northern shore of Lake Kivu with an active volcano standing a short way beyond its northern edge. Rwanda begins at the eastern side of town. The Cathedral of Saint Joseph and the Mother of Peace are the named works the city is known by.

What are the main landmarks in Goma?

Goma's named landmarks come to three. The Cathedral of Saint Joseph is the principal church on the record here, the Mother of Peace stands among the works listed for the town, and the trading house SMICO SA is registered on the same short roll of named Goma institutions. Mount Nyiragongo outranks all of them by sight.

The volcano, the Albertine Rift floor and the Lake Kivu shore make the setting that visitors come to look at.

What is the history of Goma?

The lake drew the town to this shore. Goma took its ground at the northern end of Lake Kivu, on the floor of the Albertine Rift, and the site has always carried two facts at once: open water to the south, and the active cone of Mount Nyiragongo close to the north. No founding year stands on the record.

What is recorded instead is the shape of the place, hemmed by the Bukumu Chiefdom above the city and by the Masisi Territory on the western side, with Rwanda meeting the eastern streets directly. Provincial standing followed. Goma became the capital and the largest city of the North Kivu province, and that role has held the administration of a wide stretch of the Democratic Republic of the Congo on this narrow shelf between the volcano and the water.

The Cathedral of Saint Joseph and the Mother of Peace belong to that later, settled town. Bukavu grew at the other end of Lake Kivu. Between the two the lake has served as the connecting road of the Kivu country, and the East African Rift that opened the basin remains the reason both cities sit where they do rather than anywhere else.

Where is Goma?

A rift runs beneath the ground. Goma occupies the northern shore of Lake Kivu within the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift, bordered by the Bukumu Chiefdom to the north, by Rwanda to the east and by the Masisi Territory to the west. Mount Nyiragongo stands a short way north of the built-up ground.

Bukavu keeps the far southern end of the same lake.

What is the climate of Goma?

Heat here arrives tropical. Goma stands south of the equator on the shore of Lake Kivu, so the year runs through wet and dry turns rather than a summer-and-winter pattern, and open water lies beside the streets in every season. The slopes of Mount Nyiragongo rise into the same tropical air just north of town.

Masisi Territory shares that pattern westward.

How do you get to Goma?

Three edges let people in. The eastern streets of Goma run straight up against Rwanda, Lake Kivu opens the way south toward Bukavu at the opposite end of the water, and the roads west cross into the Masisi Territory while the Bukumu Chiefdom lies over the northern boundary. Mount Nyiragongo blocks the ground behind.

Arrivals therefore come by the lake or by the frontier far more often than across the volcano.
