Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Oberwinterthur runs on its own railway station, and that is the practical reason to consider it over the Winterthur centre. Hegi Castle stands nearby. Beds are scarce in Kreis 2, but the Bahnhof Oberwinterthur puts the rest of Winterthur a few minutes away, and the Swiss Science Center Technorama sits close enough that families often work backwards from it.

What are the main landmarks in Oberwinterthur (Kreis 2)?

Two very different things anchor Oberwinterthur: the Swiss Science Center Technorama and the Roman Castrum Vitudurum beneath it. The Romans were earlier. The fort's name survives in Römerstrasse, where farmhouses and a granary still stand, and Hegi Castle holds its own ground nearby with the Reismühle Hegi and its canal beside it.

Farmhouses hold the rest. The Mittlere Mühle buildings on Hegifeldstrasse, the Wirtschaft zum Rössli, the Haus zum Freieck and Villa Kälin fill out the list.

What is the history of Oberwinterthur (Kreis 2)?

Oberwinterthur begins as Roman ground. Castrum Vitudurum stood here first, and the modern Römerstrasse still carries that name forward, past a Bauernhaus and a Speicher that survive as listed buildings. Hegi Castle followed, then the Reismühle Hegi with its mill canal and sawmill.

Sulzer came into it. The Siedlung Grabenacker went up as rows along Grabenackerstrasse, and the Mittlere Mühle even served for a time as a Lehrlingsheim for Sulzer apprentices.
