Fangshan District, Beijing — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Fangshan District (房山区) is the far southwestern district of Beijing, a broad reach of hill and plain beyond the inner city.
About Fangshan District

Where to stay in Fangshan District
Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Fangshan District sits well southwest of central Beijing, so where you sleep depends on why you came out this far. Rooms gather in the district seat. Others line the road and rail corridor that ties Fangshan back through Fengtai District toward the inner boroughs, while travellers chasing the headline sights of Beijing usually bed down closer to the historic core rather than commuting the full distance in from the southwestern fringe each morning.
From here the routes run northeast into the built-up heart of the city. Stay southwest, ride in.
About Fangshan District
What are the main landmarks in Fangshan District?
Fangshan District keeps few of Beijing's headline monuments within its own bounds. Its ground runs mostly to hill, plain and outlying town streets rather than the palaces and towers that pull crowds into the inner city. The showpieces sit elsewhere.
Most of Beijing's famous sights cluster far northeast of here, a long ride away through Fengtai District toward the historic core, so the district's own landmarks tend to be quieter local ground such as the Anzhuang cemetery on its plain. Come to Fangshan for its unhurried southwestern rhythm and save the touring for the older heart of Beijing. The district earns its place as a southwestern edge, not a sightseeing stop.
What is the history of Fangshan District?
Fangshan began as its own county far beyond the built-up edge of Beijing. The city's outward reach changed that. As Beijing spread across the plain and the surrounding county-level land was drawn steadily into the municipality, Fangshan was reorganised as a full district on the metropolis's southwestern flank, its old seat carrying its markets and its name through the shift.
The county past still shapes the ground. The district now anchors the southwestern belt of Beijing, tied along that expanding frontier to neighbours such as Mentougou District on the hill side and Fengtai District toward the inner city.
Where is Fangshan District?
Fangshan District covers nearly 2,000 square kilometres of hill and plain across the far southwestern edge of Beijing, climbing toward Mentougou District on its north side and standing well out from the inner boroughs around Haidian District, in a temperate northern band.
