What is the history of Sanya?
Sanya was long a remote corner of the empire. For most of its history this tropical shore lay at the far edge of China, a place of fishing villages and of officials sent into exile from the north, as far from the court as a man could be sent. Exiles came to the shore.
The banished scholars and ministers lived out their days by these southern seas, and the coast gained a name as the very end of the known world. The end of the earth drew pilgrims and poets. Travellers carved the words Tianya Haijiao, the edge of the sky and the rim of the sea, on the rocks by the shore, and the Li and Miao peoples farmed and fished the island.
The beaches drew the world at last. In modern times Sanya's warm bays and clear water made it the great beach resort of China, its shores lined with hotels and its temples crowned by a giant statue of Guanyin. The sea still draws the crowds.

Sanya lies at the southern tip of Hainan in China, on the coast of the South China Sea in the tropics. The city curves along a shore of sandy bays and rocky headlands where green hills come down to the sea, with coconut palms along the beaches and forested mountains rising inland. Sanya lies at the south end of Hainan, on the road and rail down the island. Fast trains and highways run to it from Haikou around the coast, and an airport brings visitors from across the land. Boats run out to the islands.
