Where to stay in Xining

Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.

Where you stay in Xining turns on the city centre or the road out to the monastery. The streets around the centre keep the mosque, the markets, and the river within a walk, and staying downtown suits anyone here for the city. The river runs through the valley.

Bare hills rise past the roofs. Out toward Kumbum and the plateau, the city gives way to monasteries, grasslands, and the road to the lake. A room out of town trades the streets for the great monastery, the high pastures, and the blue water of Qinghai Lake.

Grasslands roll to the peaks. Stay downtown for the mosque, or out for the monastery. The city lies a short way back.

About Xining

Xining is the plateau city of the northwest.

What is Xining known for?

High in the valley of the Huangshui on the rim of the Tibetan plateau, it grew as a caravan town on the old road to Tibet, and it keeps the great Kumbum Monastery of the Tibetan Buddhists in the hills nearby, one of the largest mosques of the Chinese northwest, a mix of Han and Tibetan and Muslim life in its streets, and the road to the great lake of Qinghai to the west. The high valley runs cool and clear. Bare mountains rise around.

What are the main landmarks in Xining?

Kumbum Monastery is the great sight near Xining. The vast Tibetan Buddhist monastery in a valley south of the city, its golden roofs and white stupas holding thousands of monks, draws pilgrims from across the plateau, the emblem of the region, in the hills. A great mosque stands in town.

The Dongguan Mosque gathers the faithful in the heart of the city, while the old temples, the river valley, and the road to Qinghai Lake mark the country around Xining.

What is the history of Xining?

Xining was a frontier town on the road to Tibet. For two thousand years a garrison and market stood in this valley where the Chinese lands ran up to the plateau, guarding the caravan road that ran west and south into Tibet. Traders crossed the passes.

Wool and salt and hides came down from the highlands, and tea and grain went up, and Xining grew as the great market between China and the plateau. Many peoples met in the valley. Han farmers, Tibetan herders, Muslim traders, and Mongol riders all gathered here, and the town gained Buddhist monasteries and great mosques side by side.

Faith built on the hills. The monks of Kumbum raised a famous monastery in the nearby valley, and the Muslims built one of the largest mosques of the northwest, so that Xining became a meeting place of faiths. The monastery still draws pilgrims.

Xining keeps its temples and its mosques on the Qinghai plateau.

Where is Xining?

Xining lies in the east of Qinghai in western China, in a valley of the Huangshui river high on the plateau. The city sits at over two thousand metres where the loess hills of the northwest give way to the Tibetan highlands, with dry brown mountains rising close on either side of the narrow valley. The valley runs deep and high.

Bare ranges wall the town.

What is the climate of Xining?

Xining has a cool, dry highland climate. Mild summers and cold winters cross the high valley, cooled by the altitude, with dry air, cool nights even in summer, and light snow in the long winter. The summers stay cool and pleasant.

Winter brings dry cold.

How do you get to Xining?

Xining lies in eastern Qinghai, on the road and rail between Lanzhou and Tibet. Fast trains and highways run to it up the valley from Lanzhou, and the great railway to Lhasa begins here. Roads run west to Qinghai Lake.

Lanzhou lies east down the valley.
