Chéngguān Qū is the district to book if the Potala Palace and the Jokhang are the reason for the trip. Rooms in the Barkhor quarter put the pilgrim lanes and the temple within a short walk. Mandarin Chinese runs the front desks.
West of the palace the streets run wider toward Norbulingka and the Tibet Museum, which suits you if you want quieter nights and a taxi rather than a crowd at the door. Arrivals come through Lhasa rather than through the district's own name. Chéngguān Qū covers about 519 square kilometres, so an address on its edge is not a walk from anywhere.

What are the main landmarks in Chéngguān Qū?
Chéngguān Qū holds the two buildings that bring most visitors to Tibet. The Potala Palace steps up its ridge in white and ochre, and the Jokhang sits at the centre of the Barkhor, the circuit that pilgrims wear around it. Ramoche Temple stands north of that circuit.
Norbulingka, the walled summer garden west of the centre, closes the older set. The museums gather to the west, where the Tibet Museum and the Memorial Hall Marking the Emancipation of More Than One Million Serfs stand together. The Monument to the Peaceful Liberation of Tibet fronts the square below the palace, and the Weland Museum of Contemporary Art lies south.
What is the history of Chéngguān Qū?
Chéngguān Qū took its administrative name long after the buildings that fill it. The Barkhor formed in the seventh century as the circuit worn around the Jokhang, and Ramoche Temple dates from the same era. The palace came later.
Construction of the present Potala Palace began in 1645, and Norbulingka followed from 1755 as the summer residence west of it. The Catholic Church of Lhasa, the first Catholic church in Tibet, had come and gone between 1726 and 1745. The Monument to the Peaceful Liberation of Tibet and the Memorial Hall Marking the Emancipation of More Than One Million Serfs are the newest layer.
