Manizales was founded by settlers moving south through the mountains. In the middle of the nineteenth century, families from Antioquia pushed into the wild central Andes and built the town on a high ridge, part of a great colonisation of the mountain forests. Coffee made the region rich.
The slopes around the town proved perfect for coffee, and Manizales grew into a capital of the Colombian coffee country, its wealth building grand streets and a university. Fire and earthquakes tested the town. Blazes and tremors struck the young city more than once in the early twentieth century, and each time the people rebuilt, raising at last a huge cathedral of concrete that would not burn.
The coffee landscape won world fame. The green hills of farms and villages around Manizales were named a treasure of the world, and the city became a centre of coffee and learning. Its great cathedral still towers over the ridge.
