About Günterstal
What are the main landmarks in Günterstal?
The Liebfrauenkirche, built in 1833 and 1834 with parts of the abbey's baroque facade, keeps a 14th-century Madonna at its entrance and an altar and tabernacle by Johann Michael Winterhalder from Tennenbach Abbey. Of the abbey itself only the portal survives, but the old convent buildings and walls still shape the village centre. Kloster St. Lioba and the Matthias-Claudius-Kirche stand close by, as does the Jägerbrunnendenkmal.
What is the history of Günterstal?
Günterstal first appears in 804 as Gundherrerhusir, the houses of Günther. Around 1221 a nobleman gave his daughter Adelheid land here for a small convent, which joined the Cistercian order and by 1344 owned property in 90 villages. Its baroque buildings went up from 1728 to 1738 to plans by Peter Thumb.
The nunnery was dissolved in 1806 on Napoleon's order. Fire destroyed it in 1829. In 1890 the village voted to join Freiburg, and a tram line followed in 1901.
