Kappel lies in a southern side valley of the Dreisamtal at the foot of the Schauinsland, which makes it a Black Forest base within the city boundary. The Höllentalbahn runs along the north. Littenweiler is the nearest quarter.

What are the main landmarks in Kappel?
The Kappler Tal splits southward into the Großtal and the Kleintal, with farms scattered through both. Molzhofsiedlung is the one compact housing area, in the north of the Großtal. The Schauinsland closes it.
What is the history of Kappel?
Kappel was its own place until Freiburg took it in on 1 July 1974, and it keeps an Ortsverwaltung. The Molzhofsiedlung came out of a miners' settlement in 1936, built by the Reichsheimstätte beside the Molzhof. Farming held the two valleys before that.
Where is Kappel?
The Kappler Gemarkung climbs from 338 metres at its lowest point in the north to the Schauinsland summit at 1284 metres in the south. It divides into Großtal and Kleintal. The Dreisam and the Höllentalbahn run along the northern edge.
