About Hamm
What are the main landmarks in Hamm?
Hamm's first Dreifaltigkeitskirche dates from 1693. The Hammer Park grew from part of the Hammer forest that the Geneva-born merchant Jaques de Chapeaurouge bought in 1781. In the garden of the Wichernkirche, a tube bunker holds the Bunkermuseum, and a memorial on the old Hammer Friedhof recalls the victims of 1813-14.
Johannes Brahms lived for some years in the Schwarze Straße.
What is the history of Hamm?
Hamm was first recorded in 1256, when the Schauenburg counts leased their lands between the villages of Hamme and Eilenbeke to Hamburg. From the 17th century wealthy Hamburgers built summer houses along the Hammer Landstraße. The French burned Hamm in the siege winter of 1813-14.
It became a full Stadtteil in 1894. In July 1943 Operation Gomorrha destroyed it almost completely.

Hamm lies 2.6 km east of the Hauptbahnhof, between Borgfelde and Hammerbrook to the west, Eilbek to the north, Marienthal and Horn east and Rothenburgsort south.
