What is the history of Hummelsbüttel?
Hummelsbüttel is first recorded in 1319, as Humersbotle. From the 17th century, brickworks supplying nearby Hamburg turned the farm village into something else; the last steam brickworks closed in 1968. Little now shows the old village.
High-rises stand on its former core, now called Hummelsbüttler Markt although there was never a market, and fires destroyed two of its landmark buildings, among them the oldest house, of 1672. The former Schusterkate on Grützmühlenweg is the last thatched house left.
