Where to stay in Tatenberg

The practical side of choosing where to sleep.

Tatenberg is one of the small marsh Stadtteile out beyond the city proper, quiet and rural in a way little else in Hamburg manages. It is genuinely small. Spadenland lies alongside it and Ochsenwerder beyond, and the whole group belongs to Bergedorf rather than to any of the inner boroughs.

About Tatenberg

What are the main landmarks in Tatenberg?

The dikes are the built landmark here, because the ground would not exist without them. Tatenberg was diked separately from Ochsenwerder until 1630, since a side arm of the Bille called the Binnen Rehden ran between the two places and had to be closed before they could share a defence. Low German still calls the place Totenbarg.

What is the history of Tatenberg?

A document of 1315 gives the first record of the place, under the name Tadekenberghe. The Tade in it derives from Tiet or Diet, an old word for a people, so the name reads roughly as the people's hill. Diking came later.

Until 1630 Tatenberg lay behind its own dike, separated from Ochsenwerder by the Binnen Rehden, and only then were the two brought inside one system.

Where is Tatenberg?

Tatenberg lies in the Bergedorf district of Hamburg, on the marsh ground south of the Bille, with Spadenland next to it and Ochsenwerder further along. The land is low and diked throughout. That is the whole condition of the place, and it is why the boundary with Ochsenwerder was once a watercourse rather than a line.
