Where visitors usually base themselves, and why.
Streets here are named after the Baltic. The Altes Ostseeviertel took the names of cities in the Baltic states and Scandinavia, the Parkseite took Baltic cities and islands, and the Ryckseite runs east to west after German Baltic peninsulas and north to south after polar explorers. A park divides two estates.
It has been laid out gradually since the early 1980s and separates the Parkseite from Schönwalde II. The Ryck reaches the sea a short way on.

What are the main landmarks in Ostseeviertel?
The first school built in Greifswald after the war stands here. It opened on 1 September 1962 as the seventh polytechnic secondary school, named for Martin Andersen Nexö, and it is now a primary school on the Warschauer Straße. Two gable mosaics are gone.
Mechthild Hempel made Meer und Mond on the Stettiner Straße in 1982, and both were demolished in 2010 when the quarter was being remodelled. A New Apostolic church arrived in 2018. It stands on the same street, and the special school named for Pestalozzi, founded as a Hilfsschule in 1919, has been in its building on the Wolgaster Straße since 1981.
What is the history of Ostseeviertel?
Building started with a foundation stone on 7 October 1956. The Altes Ostseeviertel went up between 1956 and 1960 under the Nationales Aufbauwerk as Greifswald's first large housing estate, and people put in voluntary building hours to earn a flat in it. Three hundred and fifty flats were finished by 1963.
The estate was extended eastward between 1970 and 1973, and a Plattenbau quarter, the Parkseite, followed from April 1981 with its blocks arranged mostly around courtyards. Ten houses came earlier than any of that. Semi-detached pairs in a rural style were built north of the Wolgaster Straße between 10 May 1920 and April 1921, long before the district around them.
The Ryckseite is the youngest part. It was added from 1987, with courtyard Plattenbau quarters in 1989 and 1990, terraced and multi-family houses from 1995, and blocks taken down again in 2013.
Where is Ostseeviertel?
The Ostseeviertel covers about two hundred and twenty hectares south of the Ryck in Greifswald, bounded east and south by the Ketscherinbach, with Wieck and Ladebow, Eldena, Schönwalde II and the Innenstadt around it.
