Rauxel, Castrop-Rauxel — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Rauxel holds Castrop-Rauxel's town hall, Arne Jacobsen's listed complex on Europaplatz not in older Castrop. Haus Goldschmieding of 1275 closes it south.

Where to stay in Rauxel

Where visitors usually base themselves, and why.

A room inside the Stadtteil is not out of the question, because the annexe raised on the old forecourt at Haus Goldschmieding works as a hotel and the manor house behind it holds the restaurant. It stands on Dortmunder Straße. Castrop-Rauxel Hauptbahnhof opened on 15 May 1847 and stands in the Ortskern here, about a kilometre north of Europaplatz, which makes Rauxel the simplest arrival point in the town. Anyone wanting a wider choice of beds books elsewhere in Castrop-Rauxel or over the boundary in Recklinghausen and rides in, but the station and the manor between them make a short-stay case for Rauxel itself.

About Rauxel

What are the main landmarks in Rauxel?

Rauxel's share of the town monument list runs to four entries, and the largest is Forum Castrop-Rauxel, the raised platform on Europaplatz that carries the Rathaus, the Stadthalle and the former Europahalle. Arne Jacobsen and Otto Weitling took the commission in a limited competition that Alvar Aalto and Egon Eiermann also entered; Jacobsen died in 1971, and Weitling finished the work with Hans Dissing. The Rathaus is a brick-faced slab 250 metres long and five storeys high, with the council chamber pushed out in front under a hanging roof on concrete pylons.

Two kilometres south on Dortmunder Straße stands Haus Goldschmieding, whose hall keeps a Renaissance chimneypiece dated 1597. Only the east tower survives. A free park of modern sculpture wraps the house, while Bahnhofstraße 222 carries a Bauhaus villa and Wartburgstraße 9 keeps a one-man splinter cell of the kind built for air raids.

What is the history of Rauxel?

Rauxel was a village before 1871. Prospecting companies had struck coal seams beneath it and beneath neighbouring Ickern during the 1860s, the Zeche Victor went into production in that year, and the Zeche Ickern followed in 1908. A single management took charge of both pits in 1917, a shared winding arrangement followed in 1922, and Peter Klöckner brought them in 1923 into the Klöckner-Werke AG Rauxel-Berlin, whose seat stayed in the Stadtteil for years afterwards.

French troops of the Ruhr occupation walked in that same year and held the shafts for twelve months. On 1 April 1926 Rauxel was merged with the town of Castrop into a new Castrop-Rauxel, kreisfrei from 1928 until the Ruhrgebiet-Gesetz handed it to the Kreis Recklinghausen on 1 January 1975. Haus Goldschmieding predates all of that, named in 1275 as a border stronghold against the counts of the Mark, rebuilt between 1583 and 1597, and sold in 1872 to the Irish engineer William Thomas Mulvany.

Where is Rauxel?

About six square kilometres of Castrop-Rauxel answer to Rauxel, which lies between Bladenhorst on the west and Deininghausen on the east, with Ickern beyond the northern edge. Town statisticians split it into Rauxel Nord and Rauxel Süd rather than count it as one district. The Bundesautobahn 42 draws that line.

Water stays north of all this, since the Rhein-Herne-Kanal and the Emscher cross Pöppinghausen, Habinghorst, Henrichenburg and Ickern instead.
