About Röhlinghausen
What are the main landmarks in Röhlinghausen?
Röhlinghausen's landmarks include the granite stone on Rolandstraße, which marks the arithmetic centre of the Ruhr regional association. Its miners' colonies are listed. They are the Kolonie Königsgrube from 1875 and a Zeche Hannover colony from 1874, protected since the 1990s.
Old colliery ground became the Königsgruber Park in the 1980s. The park is a stop on the Route Industrienatur, and the Biologische Station östliches Ruhrgebiet laid out the Glückauf Natur nature trail there. The district also has two churches, the Heilig-Geist-Kirche and the Lutherkirche.
What is the history of Röhlinghausen?
Röhlinghausen's name comes from roden, clearing land. Around 1220, as Rodelinchusen, it owed dues to the manors of Eickel and Hordel, and in 1389 Bitter von Raesfeld plundered its farms in the Great Dortmund Feud. Mining took over from 1856, when the first shafts of the Zeche Königsgrube were sunk.
Röhlinghausen joined the Amt Wanne in 1875, was the south-westernmost part of Wanne-Eickel from 1926, and has belonged to Herne since 1975.
