It is a large and quiet piece of ground. Traar runs to 906 hectares on the northeastern side of Krefeld, which makes it one of the roomier Stadtteile and mostly residential rather than commercial. Its town hall marks a short independence.
The building of 1914 dates from the years when Traar was its own Bürgermeisterei, and it serves as the district administration office. Krefeld proper is southwest.

What are the main landmarks in Traar?
The town hall is the surviving institution. Built in 1914, it testifies to the brief period when Traar governed itself and now houses the Bezirksverwaltungsstelle. The name went through six spellings.
Are, Aere, Ahr, ter Are and Terar all precede Traar, which was fixed by decree in 1886. A house gave the name to a man. Albertus de Are was called after his residence, the Haus Are, and it is through him that the place first enters the record.
What is the history of Traar?
A witness put the place in writing in 1255. Albertus de Are, named after his residence the Haus Are, witnessed a legal act of the archbishop of Cologne while the archbishop was at Uerdingen that year. Spelling settled six centuries later.
Are, Aere, Ahr, ter Are and Terar gave way to Traar, fixed by decree in 1886. Administration moved it repeatedly. Traar belonged to the Honschaft Rath until 1817 and then formed the Bürgermeisterei Bockum with Vennickel, Verberg, Oppum and Bockum, the Honschaften Rath and Vennikel were combined into the commune of Rath-Vennickel in 1837, and that commune was renamed Traar in 1886.
Independence came in 1907. Traar became a Bürgermeisterei in its own right that year and built its town hall in 1914. Krefeld took it in 1929.
The reorganisation of the Rhenish-Westphalian industrial area brought the Bürgermeisterei Traar into the city.
