About Bernsdorf
What are the main landmarks in Bernsdorf?
Bernsdorf's Sportforum on the Reichenhainer Straße grew from the stadium opened there in 1938, and a cycle track followed in 1950. The Befehlsturm, its command tower, stands in the grounds. Bernsdorf's city cemetery on the Reichenhainer Straße dates from 1874.
The Robert-Straube-Hof of 1930 on the Augsburger Straße stands beside the Bernsdorfer Plan, a 1950s estate of eleven three-storey houses.
What is the history of Bernsdorf?
Bernsdorf is first named in 1402, as Beroldisdorf, a village held by the Benedictine abbey of St. Marien in Chemnitz, which sold most of its land to the town that same year. Workers from the Chemnitz factories swelled it in the late 19th century, and it joined Chemnitz in 1907. The air raids of 1945 left heavy damage.
From 1985 the quarter grew into a university site.
