Boldesager, Esbjerg — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Boldesager is a residential district in south-western Esbjerg, a quiet quarter of the Jutland port city set back from the centre.

About Boldesager

Where to stay in Boldesager

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

Boldesager is a quarter of homes. The quarter spreads across the south-western reach of Esbjerg as housing rather than hotel ground, so most visitors take a room nearer the centre, where Sankt Nikolaj Kirke and Esbjerg Kunstmuseum mark the core of the Jutland port. You get suburban calm.

From here the city centre is a short ride, the match crowds gather at Esbjerg Idrætspark, and the neighbouring quarter of Gammelby carries the streets back toward the harbour.

About Boldesager

What are the main landmarks in Boldesager?

The set pieces stand in the wider city. Sankt Nikolaj Kirke and the spired Vor Frelsers Kirke anchor the centre of Esbjerg a short way north-east of Boldesager, while Esbjerg Kunstmuseum holds the city's art and Esbjerg Museum keeps its history. Football fills Esbjerg Idrætspark on match days.

For the curious there is also Bogtrykmuseet i Esbjerg, the printing museum, all within easy reach of this quiet quarter on the Jutland coast.

What is the history of Boldesager?

The quarter grew with the port. Esbjerg was laid out as a harbour town on the Jutland coast in the later nineteenth century, and as the city pushed inland its south-western fields filled with housing, giving rise to Boldesager as one of the residential quarters away from the docks. The churches came with the growth.

Vor Frelsers Kirke and Sankt Nikolaj Kirke rose to serve the expanding parish, while the older settlement at Jerne was drawn into the spreading city around it.

Where is Boldesager?

Boldesager lies on the south-western side of Esbjerg, in southern Denmark, on the Jutland peninsula, an inland quarter of streets and gardens that sits between the city centre and the harbour edge rather than on the North Sea front itself, with the older quarter of Jerne off to one side.
