What is the history of Batna?
The Aurès is old Roman ground. Two thousand years ago Rome built a great city at Timgad on the plain below, a perfect grid of streets, arches, and a library, and stationed a legion nearby at Lambaesis. The desert kept the ruins whole.
Sand and time buried Timgad, and it came down the ages so complete that it is called the Pompeii of Africa. Batna itself is a younger town. The French laid it out as a garrison in the eighteen-forties, and it grew as the market and army town of the Aurès, in the land of the Chaoui Berbers.
The mountains held their own wonders. In the gorges of the Aurès the Berbers built cliff villages at Ghoufi, and on the plain stood Medghacen, the great round tomb of the old Numidian kings, so Batna became the base for the marvels around it, keeping its ruins, its mountains, and its people. The old cities still stand on the plain.

Batna lies in the east of Algeria, high in the Aurès mountains. The city sits on a plateau over a thousand metres up, ringed by bare ranges and cedar forest, with the Aurès rising to the south and the high plains rolling north toward the coast. The mountains wall the town.

Batna has a cold, dry mountain climate. Warm summers and cold snowy winters cross the highlands, with hot days in the high summer and hard frost and snow through the winter. The summer warms the plateau.

How do you get to Batna?
Batna lies in the Aurès of eastern Algeria, on the road between Constantine and the desert. The mountain highway runs to it up from Constantine, and roads climb south into the Aurès and down to the Sahara. Coaches climb into the Aurès.
