What are the main landmarks in Al Muhandasīn?
One museum anchors the district. The Agriculture Museum of Ancient Egypt stands within Al Muhandasīn, and it remains the single institution the record attaches to a quarter that was drawn up as housing rather than as a monument quarter. Everything else is planned street grid.
The Engineers' Syndicate cooperative bought one sub-district and gave the whole place its colloquial name, so Mohandiseen in speech covers most of the Agouza side.
What is the history of Al Muhandasīn?
Madinat al-Awqaf came first. The 1940s scheme laid out a major sub-division of Giza under that name, and it made up most of the Wasat, or middle, district before administrative lines were redrawn. In 1997 that district was split.
Agouza and Dokki took over the ground between them. Al Muhandasīn survives as the name people use, drawn from the Engineers' Syndicate cooperative that bought one of the sub-districts outright.
