What are the main landmarks in El Albaicín?
Eleven names are recorded here. The Mirador San Miguel Alto sits highest, a viewpoint over the whole hill, while the Casa de los Mascarones and the Casa Morisca Peinador de la Reina Mora stand as houses within the old plan. Three churches follow: the Church of San Luis, the church of Saint Bartholomew, and the chapel of Saint Isidore.
Institutions take the rest. The University of Granada, the Archivo Histórico Provincial de Granada and the Observatorio de la Infancia en Andalucia are all listed, alongside the Granada Charterhouse and the Monument to the '70 strike.
What is the history of El Albaicín?
The Nasrid period laid the plan. Its lanes survived the end of the Reconquista in 1492, though the neighbourhood changed hands and character afterwards in ways that reshaped both the buildings and the life carried on across the hill. Granada Charterhouse and the Church of San Luis belong to what came after.
Recognition came much later. The World Heritage listing of 1994 extended the site of the nearby Alhambra across the Darro to take in El Albaicín as a whole.
