Santa María de Benquerencia began in 1964 as earth-moving on empty ground east of Toledo, cleared for an industrial estate. Housing followed seven years later. The Ministerio de la Vivienda had picked the site to draw industry and homes away from Madrid, and the first households moved into the finished blocks in 1971.
The residential half that grew beside the works took its street names from Spanish rivers, among them the Guadiana and the Guajaraz. Open country still separates it from the hill.
