About Turenki
What are the main landmarks in Turenki?
Turenki keeps its built landmarks along the railway, where the Turengin rautatieasema stands on the main line and the Turengin kirkko rises a short walk east of the platforms. The older monuments lie outside. Janakkala's medieval Pyhän Laurin kirkko and the crofter's holding of the Laurinmäen Torpparimuseo stand a few kilometres southwest at Tarinmaa, and the Puuhamaa amusement park is farther south again at Tervakoski.
Farther southeast, at Leppäkoski, the Ratamestarintalo keeps the memory of the actress Ida Aalberg in an old trackmaster's house.
What is the history of Turenki?
Turenki grew from farm country into a village after the railway from Helsinki to Hämeenlinna opened through it in 1862, planting the Turengin rautatieasema among the fields. The village became the municipal seat. Its offices, shops and health centre settled around the station, and the parish's own church followed only in the twentieth century, when Turengin kirkko was consecrated in 1965 to a design by the architect Keijo Petäjä.
The old parish church had always stood apart at Tarinmaa, and the centre of parish life moved to Turenki with the village.
