About Helsinki
What is Helsinki known for?
Helsinki is the capital and largest city of Finland, seat of the southern Uusimaa region on the Gulf of Finland. The sea is everywhere here. The neoclassical Helsingin tuomiokirkko crowns Senaatintori above the harbour, the Russian-built Uspenskin katedraali rises on its rock nearby, and galleries such as the Ateneum and the rock-hewn Temppeliaukion kirkko draw visitors across a city scattered over peninsulas and islands.
What are the main landmarks in Helsinki?
The Helsingin tuomiokirkko is the great landmark of the capital, its white neoclassical dome rising over Senaatintori at the heart of Helsinki. Two cathedrals face the harbour. The red-brick Uspenskin katedraali stands on its rock above the water, while the Ateneum, the contemporary Nykytaiteen museo Kiasma and the Suomen kansallismuseo gather the country's art and history, the rock-cut Temppeliaukion kirkko and the seaside Sibelius-monumentti drawing visitors across this Baltic city of Uusimaa.
What is the history of Helsinki?
Helsinki began as a trading rival. The town was founded in 1550 on the Gulf of Finland by Swedish order, set up to draw the Baltic trade toward this shore, and it long carried the Swedish name Helsingfors. For two centuries it stayed small.
A sea fortress was later raised on the islands off the harbour to guard the approach, and the Suomenlinnan kirkko still marks that ring of bastions at the harbour mouth. Everything changed when Finland passed to Russian rule and the capital was settled here. A new monumental centre was laid out around Senaatintori, the white Helsingin tuomiokirkko crowning the square while the Russian-built Uspenskin katedraali rose on its rock nearby.
The city grew into the seat of the Uusimaa region and the nation, gaining the Ateneum, the Suomen kansallismuseo and the grand Helsingin päärautatieasema as Finland moved toward independence. That long story is gathered now across the squares and museums of the capital, from the Helsingin kaupunginmuseo by the cathedral to the seaside Sibelius-monumentti.
Where is Helsinki?
Helsinki spreads over a broken coast of southern Finland, a city of peninsulas, bays and islands on the Gulf of Finland. The sea cuts deep inland. Hundreds of small islands lie scattered off the shore of Uusimaa, the harbour fortress on its ring of skerries guarding the approach, while the built city climbs the granite ridges between the inlets.
The water shapes the plan. Markets, quays and parks like the Esplanadin puisto run down to the harbours, and ferries thread out across the gulf toward the Estonian coast.
What is the climate of Helsinki?
Helsinki has a cool coastal climate softened a little by the Gulf of Finland, though the sea ices over in a hard winter. The harbour can freeze solid. Snow lies over Senaatintori and the squares of the capital through the long dark months, the daylight short above the Uusimaa coast, before the brief bright summers fill the parks and quays of southern Finland with light that stretches deep into the night.
How do you get to Helsinki?
Helsinki is the hub of Finland, reached by air, rail and sea. Most arrive easily. Trains from across the country run into the grand Helsingin päärautatieasema in the centre, the airport north of the city links it to Europe and beyond, and the road network of Uusimaa feeds in from every side.
Ferries cross the Gulf of Finland to the harbours, carrying travellers from the Estonian and Swedish coasts straight into the heart of the capital.
