Korkalovaara took its present form as Rovaniemi spread up its western hills. Housing climbed the slope. As the Lapland capital grew beyond its riverside core, the high western ground became one of the city's larger residential districts, and Korkalovaara, alongside Vennivaara to the north, came to hold a sizeable share of the everyday life of this town in the Arctic north of Finland.
