Where to stay in Myllytulli
The right area depends on your trip. Here's who each one suits — pick the place, then the hotel.
Myllytulli sits within walking reach of central Oulu's hotels, so a stay here means the museums on the doorstep. Base yourself by the river. Rooms near the Tiedekeskus Tietomaa and the Oulun taidemuseo put the cultural quarter within steps, while the broader centre around the Oulun tuomiokirkko offers the city's full range of beds a short walk from this north-eastern district of Oulu.
About Myllytulli
What are the main landmarks in Myllytulli?
Myllytulli gathers much of Oulu's culture by the river. The Tiedekeskus Tietomaa science centre, the Pohjois-Pohjanmaan museo, and the Oulun taidemuseo stand close together here, the city's halls of science, history, and art. Older houses survive among them.
Franzénin talo and the villa Ainola keep the district's earlier fabric, while the Oulun tuomiokirkko rises nearby at the centre and the Ouluhalli draws crowds to the edge of this north-eastern quarter of Oulu.
What is the history of Myllytulli?
Myllytulli grew along the working channels of the Oulujoki, where the river's power once turned mills at the edge of old Oulu. The district later became the city's cultural shelf. Mills gave way to museums.
The Pohjois-Pohjanmaan museo and the Tiedekeskus Tietomaa rose on the riverbank, and houses such as Franzénin talo were kept from the older town, turning this north-eastern strip of central Oulu into a quarter of memory and learning beside the water.
Where is Myllytulli?
Myllytulli forms part of the city-centre area of north-eastern Oulu, on the southern channels of the Oulujoki as the river fans into the Gulf of Bothnia. The district holds the city's cultural ground. Its riverside streets carry museums and concert halls between the centre proper and the water, with the district of Vaara lying to its south within the same central core of Oulu.
A compact cultural quarter on the river.
