Where to stay in Tuira
The right area depends on your trip. Here's who each one suits — pick the place, then the hotel.
Tuira is mostly residential. The quarter fills the northern bank of Oulu near Tuiran kirkko, apartment ground rather than hotel ground, so most visitors stay in the centre and cross over for the river walks and the sports grounds at Raatin urheilukeskus. You get riverside quiet here.
The science centre Tiedekeskus Tietomaa and the cathedral Oulun tuomiokirkko stand within reach across the water, drawing day visitors from this northern reach of the city in northern Finland.
About Tuira
What are the main landmarks in Tuira?
The river ties the markers together. Tuiran kirkko serves the parish on the northern bank, the nearest fixed point for the apartment streets of Tuira, while the sports grounds of Raatin urheilukeskus fill the islands that carry the quarter back toward the centre of Oulu. Across the water the landmarks gather.
The science centre Tiedekeskus Tietomaa, the regional museum Pohjois-Pohjanmaan museo, the art museum Oulun taidemuseo, and the cathedral Oulun tuomiokirkko all stand within reach, drawing visitors from this northern reach of the city in northern Finland.
What is the history of Tuira?
The district grew on the far bank. As Oulu built northward across the river through the twentieth century, Tuira filled with apartments and became one of the city's largest residential quarters in northern Finland. The parish followed the growth.
Tuiran kirkko rose to serve the new streets, the merchant's house Franzénin talo and the timber-trade villa Santaholman talo recalled the older river commerce, and the sports grounds of Raatin urheilukeskus took shape on the islands that join Tuira to the centre.
