Where to stay in Oulunsuu
The right area depends on your trip. Here's who each one suits — pick the place, then the hotel.
Oulunsuu is a residential river district, so beds here are few. Most visitors base themselves in central Oulu and reach the riverside churches from there. If you want to stay near the Oulujoki, the run of streets toward Karjasilta and the city centre puts you within easy reach of the water and the hotels of Oulu alike.
About Oulunsuu
What are the main landmarks in Oulunsuu?
Two churches mark the district. Oulujoen kirkko stands by the river that gives Oulunsuu its name, the old parish church of the riverside community, and Kastellin kirkko serves the newer streets reaching toward the rest of Oulu. The riverbank also gathers remembrance.
The Sankarimuistomerkki, Oulujoki and the Tyhjän sylin muistomerkki keep the memory of the war years, and the Muualle haudattujen muistomerkki Oulujoki stands among them as a quiet marker in this corner of south-eastern Oulu beside the Oulujoki.
What is the history of Oulunsuu?
Oulunsuu grew up as a riverside parish at the mouth of the Oulujoki, older than much of the built-up city around it. Oulujoen kirkko anchored that early settlement. The community kept its own name and church as the wider municipality of Oulu spread south-east to meet it, folding the old river village into the modern city while the bend of the Oulujoki still set the shape of its lanes.
Where is Oulunsuu?
Oulunsuu lies in south-eastern Oulu, on the south bank of the Oulujoki a short way inland from where the river reaches the Gulf of Bothnia. The district carries the river's name. Its very name means the mouth of the Oulu, and the water has shaped where its streets run and where its churches stand.
Riverside Oulunsuu gives way to the neighbouring district of Karjasilta on its way back toward the heart of Oulu.
