A factory move started it. Wärtsilä relocated its works from Helsinki to Järvenpää in 1970 and blocks of flats began going up nearby, which is the whole reason the district exists. The first blocks were on Naavatie.
They were completed in 1972, when the area still counted as Saunakallio, and the ground east of the railway was named Jamppa only later. Rental housing predominates.

The Jampan Asukasyhdistys acts as an operator in the suburb rather than only as a voice for it. It was named village of the year. Jamppa was chosen as the Uusimaa village of the year in 2005.
What is the history of Jamppa?
Wärtsilä brought the people. The factory moved from Helsinki to Järvenpää in 1970, and blocks of flats began to rise nearby to house those who came with it. Building started in 1972.
The first blocks were finished that year on Naavatie, when the area was still reckoned part of Saunakallio. The name came afterwards. Ground east of the railway was named Jamppa later, which is why the suburb is younger than its buildings in one sense and older in another.
It was made a project area. Järvenpää has run development work in Jamppa under its own name, with the Jampan Asukasyhdistys operating in the suburb, and Jamppa was chosen Uusimaa village of the year in 2005.
