About Järvenpää

What is Järvenpää known for?

Järvenpää is known for the artists' colony of Lake Tuusula, where much of independent Finland's culture took shape on the shore of this Uusimaa town. Names cling to the water. Here Jean Sibelius built his home at Ainola, the writer Juhani Aho lived at Ahola, and the composer Joonas Kokkonen later raised the Villa Kokkonen, while the Järvenpään taidemuseo keeps the art of that lakeside circle in southern Finland.

What are the main landmarks in Järvenpää?

Ainola is the landmark that draws visitors to Järvenpää, the lakeside home Jean Sibelius built above Lake Tuusula. Nearby on the same shore stands Ahola, the house of the writer Juhani Aho, and the modernist Villa Kokkonen raised for the composer Joonas Kokkonen. Art and faith fill the town too.

The Järvenpään taidemuseo keeps the work of the lakeside colony of southern Finland, the Järvenpään kirkko rises over the centre, and the Orthodox Jumalansynnyttäjän Kazanilaisen ikonin kirkko serves the faithful of this Uusimaa town.

What is the history of Järvenpää?

Järvenpää grew where the railway crossed the farmland of Uusimaa near the shore of Lake Tuusula. The line from the capital brought villas and visitors to the lake in the late nineteenth century, and the shore became an artists' colony where independent Finland's culture took shape. The lake drew the makers.

Jean Sibelius built Ainola above the water, the writer Juhani Aho lived at Ahola, and painters and musicians settled along the shore that the young nation looked to for its identity in southern Finland. The settlement rose around that gathering. The parish raised the Järvenpään kirkko, the Orthodox community the Jumalansynnyttäjän Kazanilaisen ikonin kirkko, and the town held to its lakeside name.

Järvenpää was chartered as a town in 1951, a late municipality of the metropolitan ring, and later years added the modernist Villa Kokkonen for the composer Joonas Kokkonen and gathered the colony's art into the Järvenpään taidemuseo. The lakeside houses of the early masters keep Järvenpää known across Finland as the home of the Lake Tuusula circle.

Where is Järvenpää?

Järvenpää lies in the southern interior of Finland, in the centre of Uusimaa, on the eastern shore of Lake Tuusula north of the capital. The town spreads over low farmland between the lake and the railway, the water along its western edge, the metropolitan country of Uusimaa close around it. The land lies gentle and settled.

Fields and woods run between the lake and the rail line through the compact municipality, the shore of Lake Tuusula holding the old villas, and the wider built ring of southern Finland reaches south toward the sea.

What is the climate of Järvenpää?

Järvenpää has a cold but tempered climate, milder than the Finnish interior thanks to its place in southern Uusimaa near the sea. Winters are cold and snowy, Lake Tuusula freezing over and the shore villas standing under snow from early in the season through to the spring thaw. Summers are warm and long for Finland.

The long northern light draws walkers to the lakeshore and the artists' houses through the green season around Järvenpää, the season when most visitors come to this town of southern Finland.

How do you get to Järvenpää?

Järvenpää sits on the main rail line north of the capital, and the train is the easy way in to this town of Uusimaa. Frequent commuter services run out from the metropolis to the station in the centre, putting the lakeside town within a short ride of southern Finland's largest city. The line does most of the work.

Buses and the main road link Järvenpää to the rest of Uusimaa, and visitors heading for the shore of Lake Tuusula often walk or ride the last stretch from the station to Ainola and the artists' houses.
