Pargas grew out of the old parishes of the Archipelago Sea. Pargas takes its weather from the Archipelago Sea, milder and wetter than the inland of Varsinais-Suomi. The sea softens it. Winters run cold but the open water holds off the deepest frost, and the channels around the islands freeze later than the lakes ashore, so the ferries run on through much of the dark season.

The summers are long and bright on the archipelago, when the sea warms slowly under the northern daylight and the cottages of the islands around Pargas fill before the autumn storms blow in off the Baltic.

Pargas is reached by road and a chain of ferries through the Archipelago Sea, with no railway of its own. The main town sits a short drive from Turku across the bridge, close to the Paraisten kirkko, and the regional buses of Varsinais-Suomi run the same road. Then the ferries take over.

From the main island the free and timed ferries hop out through the skerries toward Korppoon kirkko and Nauvon kirkko, and the small ship to Utö carries those bound for the outermost lighthouse island.
