Where to stay in Pargas

The right area depends on your trip. Here's who each one suits — pick the place, then the hotel.

Pargas spreads its beds across the islands of the Archipelago Sea, with a small hotel and guesthouses in the main town and cottages strung out through the skerries. The town centre around the Paraisten kirkko suits first stays, with the shops, the medieval church and the Paraisten kotiseutumuseo all within an easy walk and the ferries out to the outer parishes close by. It is the simplest base.

Further out, cabins and inns stand on the larger islands toward Korppoon kirkko and Nauvon kirkko, a good base for hopping the Archipelago Sea by ferry and bridge through Varsinais-Suomi. Stock thins fast on the outer rocks. The lighthouse island of Utö, with the Utön majakka at its tip, keeps a handful of rooms for those who want the open sea, and the old island church at the Seilin museokirkko draws a few who stay among the skerries, while many visitors instead sleep in nearby Turku and come out for the day.

Book ahead in summer, when the archipelago cottages around Pargas fill and the ferry-island rooms go early.

About Pargas

What is Pargas known for?

Pargas is known across Varsinais-Suomi as a town of islands, gathered out of the old parishes of the Archipelago Sea. The medieval Paraisten kirkko anchors the main town, while the outer parishes keep their own stone churches at Korppoon kirkko, Nauvon kirkko and the far skerries. Islands make the place.

The lighthouse at Utön majakka stands on the outermost rock of Utö, the manor of Kuitia holds the mainland edge, and the old island church of the Seilin museokirkko marks the deep past of this south-western corner of Finland.

What are the main landmarks in Pargas?

The medieval Paraisten kirkko is the landmark that anchors the main town, the grey-stone church at the heart of this archipelago town in Varsinais-Suomi. Out among the islands the outer parishes keep their own stone churches, the Korppoon kirkko and the Nauvon kirkko. Sea holds the rest.

The lighthouse of the Utön majakka stands on the outer rock of Utö, the manor of Kuitia keeps a noble estate near the mainland, the island church of the Seilin museokirkko marks an old hospital island, and the town's past is gathered in the Paraisten kotiseutumuseo.

What is the history of Pargas?

Pargas grew out of the old parishes of the Archipelago Sea. The medieval Paraisten kirkko rose in grey stone on the mainland edge, and across the islands the congregations of Korppoon kirkko and Nauvon kirkko worshipped in their own stone churches as the sea-going life of Varsinais-Suomi took shape. Stone marked the faith.

The manor of Kuitia held a noble seat near the shore, while the island of Seili, with its old church now kept as the Seilin museokirkko, served first as a leper colony and then as a hospital far out among the skerries. The modern town is young, a single municipality of many islands. Chartered in the 21st century, Pargas was drawn together from the archipelago parishes and the mainland church town into one whole spanning the Archipelago Sea.

Lime and stone shaped the working life of the main island, while the outer rocks lived by fishing and the sea, and the lighthouse of the Utön majakka guided ships past the outermost island of Utö. The town's long past is gathered in the Paraisten kotiseutumuseo of this south-western corner of Finland.

Where is Pargas?

Pargas lies across the Archipelago Sea of south-western Finland, a town built of islands more than land. Thousands of islands, skerries and channels make up the broad municipality of Varsinais-Suomi, the main town gathered by the Paraisten kirkko while water and rock spread out to the open sea. The sea runs through everything.

Ferries and bridges link the larger islands toward Korppoon kirkko and Nauvon kirkko, and the outermost rock of Utö, with the Utön majakka at its tip, stands where the archipelago breaks into the open Baltic.

What is the climate of Pargas?

Pargas takes its weather from the Archipelago Sea, milder and wetter than the inland of Varsinais-Suomi. The sea softens it. Winters run cold but the open water holds off the deepest frost, and the channels around the islands freeze later than the lakes ashore, so the ferries run on through much of the dark season.

The summers are long and bright on the archipelago, when the sea warms slowly under the northern daylight and the cottages of the islands around Pargas fill before the autumn storms blow in off the Baltic.

How do you get to Pargas?

Pargas is reached by road and a chain of ferries through the Archipelago Sea, with no railway of its own. The main town sits a short drive from Turku across the bridge, close to the Paraisten kirkko, and the regional buses of Varsinais-Suomi run the same road. Then the ferries take over.

From the main island the free and timed ferries hop out through the skerries toward Korppoon kirkko and Nauvon kirkko, and the small ship to Utö carries those bound for the outermost lighthouse island.
