Where to stay in Salo

The right area depends on your trip. Here's who each one suits — pick the place, then the hotel.

Salo keeps a modest stock of beds for a market town of Varsinais-Suomi, the kind of place where a town hotel or a guesthouse near the centre is the usual room. The centre by the Uskela river suits visitors who want the Salon kirkko, the market square, the shops and the Salon historiallinen museo SAMU all within an easy walk. It is the simplest base.

Out across the broad municipality, cottages and country guesthouses stand among the fields and woods near the old parishes of Halikko and Uskela, by the medieval Halikon kirkko and the prehistoric site of Rikala, a good base for touring the south-western Finnish countryside by car. Stock thins beyond the town. Visitors drawn to art often stay near the Salon taidemuseo Veturitalli, while travellers from farther off sometimes sleep in Turku and drive into Salo for the day.

Book ahead in summer, when the rooms by the river and the country cottages of Varsinais-Suomi fill early.

About Salo

What is Salo known for?

Salo is known as the market and industrial town of the south-western Finnish countryside, grown where the old parishes of Uskela and Halikko meet on the river plain of Varsinais-Suomi. The Salon kirkko marks the town centre, while the medieval Halikon kirkko and the Uskelan kirkko keep the surrounding parishes. Trade and rail built the place.

The Salon taidemuseo Veturitalli holds the art collection in an old engine shed, and the Salon historiallinen museo SAMU keeps the town's past beside the Uskela river.

What are the main landmarks in Salo?

The medieval Halikon kirkko is among the oldest landmarks of Salo, the grey stone church of the Halikko parish on the river plain of Varsinais-Suomi. In the town the Salon kirkko and the Uskelan kirkko keep their congregations, the latter rising above the older Uskelan Isokylän emäkirkko ground. Older still is the river bank.

The prehistoric site of Rikala records early settlement, while the Salon taidemuseo Veturitalli holds art in an old engine shed and the Salon historiallinen museo SAMU keeps the town's history beside the Uskela river.

What is the history of Salo?

Salo's history runs from prehistoric river bank to market town. People settled early on the plain of the Uskela river, leaving the prehistoric ground of Rikala, and the medieval parishes of Halikko and Uskela gathered at their stone churches, the Halikon kirkko and the older church ground of the Uskelan Isokylän emäkirkko in Varsinais-Suomi. Farm and parish came first.

A market grew at the meeting of the parishes, the trading place by the river that gave the town its name. The town took its modern shape in the 19th century, chartered in 1887 as a market town on the river plain. Then came the rails.

When the line reached Salo it drew shops, trade and industry to a growing centre, where the Salon kirkko rose for the new town and the engine shed that now holds the Salon taidemuseo Veturitalli served the railway. A neighbouring parish kept its own church, the Uskelan kirkko, above the river. Salo settled into its role as the market and industrial centre of this corner of south-western Finland, its long past gathered in the Salon historiallinen museo SAMU.

Where is Salo?

Salo lies on the river plain of southern Varsinais-Suomi, in south-western Finland, where the Uskela river winds through farmland toward the archipelago coast. The town centre gathers by the river, with fields, low ridges and woodland spreading across the broad municipality on every side. Farmland fills the plain.

The old parish of Halikko around the Halikon kirkko lies to the west, the church ground of Uskela and the prehistoric site of Rikala stand near the river, and the wide rural country of Salo runs down toward the Archipelago Sea to the south.

What is the climate of Salo?

Salo carries the mild coastal climate of south-western Finland, its seasons tempered by the nearness of the Archipelago Sea down the Uskela river plain. Winters bring frost and snow to the fields and the river valley around the town, though the sea keeps the cold a touch gentler than in the inland country of Varsinais-Suomi. Summers are warm and long-lit.

The long northern daylight warms the farmland and the river through the growing season around Salo, the time when the country cottages of the south-western coast fill before the autumn.

How do you get to Salo?

Salo sits on the railway and the main road of southern Varsinais-Suomi, and both train and car reach it easily. Trains stop in the town on the line that runs between Turku and the wider south-western Finnish coast, the rails that built the market centre. The line still carries travellers here.

The main road links Salo to Turku and on toward the rest of the region, and buses reach the centre and the surrounding parishes, while visitors from farther off come through Turku before the last stretch down the Uskela river plain.
