Where to Stay in Salo, Varsinais-Suomi

Salo is known as the market and industrial town of the south-western Finnish countryside, grown where the old parishes of Uskela and Halikko meet on the river plain of Varsinais-Suomi. The Salon kirkko marks the town centre, while the medieval Halikon kirkko and the Uskelan kirkko keep the surrounding parishes. Trade and rail built the place.

The medieval Halikon kirkko is among the oldest landmarks of Salo, the grey stone church of the Halikko parish on the river plain of Varsinais-Suomi. Salo's history runs from prehistoric river bank to market town. People settled early on the plain of the Uskela river, leaving the prehistoric ground of Rikala, and the medieval parishes of Halikko and Uskela gathered at their stone churches, the Halikon kirkko and the older church ground of the Uskelan Isokylän emäkirkko in Varsinais-Suomi. Farm and parish came first.

A market grew at the meeting of the parishes, the trading place by the river that gave the town its name. The town took its modern shape in the 19th century, chartered in 1887 as a market town on the river plain. Then came the rails.

When the line reached Salo it drew shops, trade and industry to a growing centre, where the Salon kirkko rose for the new town and the engine shed that now holds the Salon taidemuseo Veturitalli served the railway. A neighbouring parish kept its own church, the Uskelan kirkko, above the river. Salo settled into its role as the market and industrial centre of this corner of south-western Finland, its long past gathered in the Salon historiallinen museo SAMU.

Salo lies on the river plain of southern Varsinais-Suomi, in south-western Finland, where the Uskela river winds through farmland toward the archipelago coast. Winters bring frost and snow to the fields and the river valley around the town, though the sea keeps the cold a touch gentler than in the inland country of Varsinais-Suomi. Summers are warm and long-lit.

The long northern daylight warms the farmland and the river through the growing season around Salo, the time when the country cottages of the south-western coast fill before the autumn.

Salo sits on the railway and the main road of southern Varsinais-Suomi, and both train and car reach it easily. Trains stop in the town on the line that runs between Turku and the wider south-western Finnish coast, the rails that built the market centre. The line still carries travellers here.

The main road links Salo to Turku and on toward the rest of the region, and buses reach the centre and the surrounding parishes, while visitors from farther off come through Turku before the last stretch down the Uskela river plain.
