What is the history of Le Camas?
Le Camas is older than its avenues. The cartulary of the abbey of Saint-Victor names it in the 11th century as Campus Martius, the Field of Mars, a name that became Camas by the 14th century. In 1849 the architect Pierre Marius Bérengier built its church of Saint-Michel, the first neo-Gothic church in Marseille.
Tram 68 ran through the quarter from 1893 to 2004. In April 2023 an explosion brought down two buildings on the rue de Tivoli and killed eight people.
